Utrecht is without a doubt one of the most beautiful Dutch cities. The city’s history is incredibly rich and tangible; its medieval center is the largest in the country. The relatively young and educated population gives the city a vibrant feel, and its cultural agenda is chockfull year-round. At only 30 minutes from Amsterdam, Utrecht counts itself lucky to remain relatively undiscovered by the tourist masses. It’s a place where Dutch culture and history can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Or, as CNN Travel put it: ‘without having to dodge British bachelor parties yakking regurgitated Heineken onto your souvenir clogs.’
Utrecht Free Tours emerged out of the Couchsurfing community in 2011. Inspired by successful examples in other European cities, we realized that Utrecht deserved its own walking tours designed for a young, international audience. After some trials in 2011 we ‘officially’ started with weekly tours in March 2012. And it proved quite successful: since that date, people have been showing up at the Dom Tower every single Saturday. A few years later we introduced a Sunday tour, and now you can also join us every Wednesday!
Aiming to show Utrecht through the eyes of locals, we want to share with you the best, funniest and most bizarre stories. Beside highlights such as the Dom Tower and the canals, we take you to places no tourist would otherwise find. Utrechters who want to know more about the fascinating history of their home town are more than welcome too! All of the guides have a distinct passion for the city; we live here and guiding is our hobby. That’s why Utrecht Free Tours is not (part of) a company, but a completely independent and non-profit initiative. Donations we receive will also be used to cover our expenses, such as this website.
